Samra & Philippe’s Bethesda Terrace Elopement
Samra and Philippe met outside a Manhattan bar in the summer of 2021. They flirted, shared an Uber, and never traded numbers. That should have been the end of it. A year and a half later a friend’s birthday put them in the same room again, and this time they didn’t let it slide.
It got serious fast, and then life tested it. Right as they started dating, Samra’s mom was diagnosed with cancer for the second time, and Samra flew home to Seattle for six weeks to be with her. Philippe called every day and got on a plane to spend a weekend there, early enough that it told her everything. First-generation kids from different backgrounds, they kept finding the same things underneath: family, food, travel, the way you show up for people. A few years, a shared apartment, and a long list of countries later (Thailand, Italy, Argentina, Portugal), they came back to the city that introduced them to get married in Central Park.
It rained. They went anyway.
The ceremony was at Bethesda Terrace, under the arcade with the tiled ceiling, 14 guests and Philippe’s nephew Teddy, nine, on ring duty. Then it started to pour. They rolled with it, clear umbrellas up, out through the park and across town to the New York Public Library for portraits on the steps and past the lions, the rain making the marble and the wet streets look better than a clear day would have. Vanessa Weeden shot it on film, candid and unhurried, the way it actually happened. The night landed at Ci Siamo, dinner and a rooftop with the Empire State Building lit up behind them. For two people who didn’t want to be the center of attention, it was exactly the right amount of wedding. Rain included.
