Common questions from Aussie couples

Is an NYC marriage recognised in the Australia?

Yes. Legal marriages from the United States are recognised in Australia.

How do we get legally married in New York?

Cakewalk supports you throughout the entire process. Here’s how it works:

  • We book your marriage licence appointment for you, planned around your trip dates.

  • Once in New York, you both appear in person to pick up your licence. Hold onto it until the ceremony.

  • At the ceremony, you’ll give the licence to your Cakewalk officiant. They’ll complete it correctly.

  • After the ceremony, your Cakewalk officiant files the signed licence, so you can enjoy the rest of the day.

  • The NYC City Clerk will process your license and mail your Certificate of Marriage Registration (typically within about 8 weeks, but you’re officially married the moment the officiant signs the license).

Can we pick up our licence and get married on the same day?

No. New York law requires that you perform your wedding ceremony at least 24 hours after picking up the licence. Licence appointments are also only available on weekdays, excluding US holidays. You’ll need to plan your travel duration accordingly.

Do we need to register our NYC marriage licence at home?

No. Your marriage is legally recognised in Australia without registering it. However, if you’re changing your name, you’ll need a change of name certificate from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in your home state. Your NYC marriage certificate is part of that application. Once it’s issued, you can update your passport, licence, bank and everything else.
