Common questions from UK couples

Is an LA marriage recognised in the UK?

Yes. Legal marriages in Los Angeles County are recognised in the United Kingdom.

How do we get legally married in Los Angeles?

Cakewalk will guide you through every step. Here’s how it works:

  • We tell you exactly when to book your marriage licence appointment based on your trip dates and wedding date.

  • Once in Los Angeles, you both appear in person to pick up your licence from the County Registrar.

  • At the ceremony, give the licence to your Cakewalk officiant. They’ll marry you and make sure the paperwork is completed correctly.

  • After the ceremony, your Cakewalk officiant mails the licence for you, so you can enjoy the rest of your wedding day.

  • The Los Angeles County Clerk will process your license and mail you a certified copy if you purchased one (typically within about 8 weeks, but you’re officially married the moment the officiant signs the license).

Can we pick up our licence and get married on the same day?

Yes. There’s no waiting period in California. Once you have the license in hand, you can get married the same day. Just remember: you can only schedule your appointment on non-holiday weekdays.

Do we need to register our Los Angeles marriage licence at home?

No. The Los Angeles County Clerk will mail you a certified copy of your marriage license. That’s all you need to update your name on your passport, your bank, or anything else that asks.
