A day in the life of a New York City elopement planner

If you were wondering how to elope in New York City (or just want a peak behind the curtain) — you’re in luck! This is what an average day looks like for us at Cakewalk.

8:00 AM

First things first – we’re hitting up Fort Greene dog park. This has nothing (and everything) to do with wedding planning. It’s where we wait for the caffeine to hit our blood stream and let the most important partner in our business (Ruca) have some well deserved social time before the day really sets in. It also comes with the added bonus of meeting cool couples like Lucy and Gabby, who we married in the park earlier this year.

9:00 AM

We clock in at the email factory. We’re responding to all of our wedding inquiries and scheduling some (virtual) face-to-face time with our couples. We get to chat about their love stories and wedding visions–one of the most fun parts of our job.

10:00 AM

Time to get serious and focused and tackle booking and scheduling. We’re hopping on the phone to negotiate venue prices, we’re booking vintage taxi cabs, we’re scheduling marriage license appointments–you name it.

11:00 AM

A visit from our favorite florist, Vivianne. Today we got to a stunning yellow bouquet for a couple getting married tomorrow at the Top of the Rock. Because we’re 24 hours away from the wedding, we’re also triple checking the final details. Our photographer gets sent a shot list and our couple gets their final run-of-show. We want to make sure the couple knows exactly what to expect. Rolling with the punches is what we do, but we leave as little room for error as possible.

1:00 PM

Time to get back to planning. All of our couples receive a proposal within a week of their initial “get to know ya” meeting. We go through our directory of venues and vendors and put together 3 to 4 wedding ceremonies that speak to our couples likes and interests.

3:00 PM

We go on a field trip! Sometimes we think of a venue that would be perfect for a prospective couple that we haven’t worked with in the past–so we hop on the train and scout it out. Today we’re checking out the flower district.

5:00 P:M

The best way to finish any day: we get back wedding photos. We take a few seconds to “oooh” and “aaah” at our beautiful couples before sending them over. (If you want to “ooh” and “aah” with us, you can find the rest of their pictures here)
