Common questions from Kiwi couples
Is an NYC marriage recognised in New Zealand?
Yes. Legal marriages from the United States are recognised in New Zealand.
How do we get legally married in New York?
Cakewalk helps you throughout the entire process, start-to-finish. Here’s how it works:
Before you fly: We schedule your marriage licence appointment for you.
In New York: You both go to the City Clerk in person to collect the licence. Keep it safe until the ceremony.
On the day: Hand the licence to your Cakewalk officiant, who fills it out properly.
Right after: Your officiant files the signed licence for you. Nothing left for you to do.
A few weeks later: The City Clerk processes it and posts your Certificate of Marriage Registration, usually within about 8 weeks. You’re legally married from the moment your officiant signs the licence.
Can we pick up our licence and get married on the same day?
No. New York law requires that you perform your wedding ceremony at least 24 hours after picking up the licence. Licence appointments are also only available on weekdays, excluding US holidays. You’ll need to plan your travel duration accordingly.
Do we need to register our NYC marriage licence at home?
No. Your marriage is registered in New York, and it’s legally recognised in New Zealand without registering it again. Changing your name is simple too. There’s no extra paperwork. Just show your NYC marriage certificate to your bank and anyone else who asks. For your passport, apply for a new one and send your original certificate with it.
